What is Sayana Press?
Sayana Press is a contraceptive injection that protects against pregnancy for up to 13 weeks (3 months).
How it works:
- Stops your body from releasing an egg
- Thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching an egg
How it’s given:
- A small injection under the skin, usually in the arm, thigh, or abdomen
- Can be given by a nurse, pharmacist, or even yourself after training
Effectiveness:
Over 99% effective when used on schedule
Possible side effects:
- Changes in periods (lighter, heavier, or skipped)
- Headaches, weight changes, or mood changes
- Most side effects are temporary
Other things to know:
- Fertility usually returns a few months after stopping
- Does not protect against STIs – condoms are still needed for STI protection
